Dr. Bert Vaux

Biography

Bert Vaux is a Professor in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. He specializes in phonology, morphology, historical linguistics, dialectology, and psycholinguistics. His research primarily focuses on phenomena that illuminate the structure and origins of the phonological component of grammar. Vaux is particularly interested in psychophonology, which includes areas such as language games, speech errors, language acquisition, and the development of writing systems. Furthermore, he conducts research in historical linguistics, encompassing sound change, linguistic reconstruction, and the evolution of languages including Indo-European, Altaic, and Northwest Caucasian. He has a passion for working with native speakers to document endangered languages, particularly dialects of Armenian, Abkhaz, and English. His recent projects include investigations into the Armenian dialect of New Julfa in Isfahan, and the Cwyzhy dialect of Abkhaz. Vaux has authored several works including 'Rules and Constraints in Contemporary Phonological Theory' and has participated in linguistic field methods studies. His vast experience and deep commitment to linguistics make him a notable figure in the field.
