Berthold Hoeckner is a music historian specializing in 19th-20th century music. He has focused on aesthetics, the works of Theodor Adorno, music literature, film music, visual culture, and the psychology and neuroscience of music. His contributions to the field are recognized through various notable awards and fellowships including the Alfred Einstein Award from the American Musicological Society in 1998 and the Humboldt Research Fellowship in 2001/2. Hoeckner has also received the Mellon New Directions Fellowship for the years 2006/7 and a Faculty Fellowship from the Franke Institute of the Humanities for 2012/13.
