Dr. Bertil Cottier

Biography

Bertil Cottier is a Full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at Università della Svizzera italiana. He studied law at the University of Lausanne and the School of Law at Columbia University in New York. His career includes serving as a court reporter for the newspaper '24 Heures' from 1977 to 1983 and as a staff legal advisor in media law and data protection units at the Federal Office of Justice in Bern between 1984 and 1987. Cottier served as the deputy director of the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law from 1987 to 2005, and from 2004 to 2006, he was the director of an advanced studies program focusing on law, criminality, security, and new technologies at the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva. He has been an Associate Professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Lausanne, specializing in Internet Governance, and has been a visiting professor at the Academy of Journalism at the University of Neuchâtel. Cottier is also the editor of Medialex, a Swiss journal on communication law, and a member of various boards and committees in the field of communication law. His research interests include transparency of public authorities, the legal status of radio and television, Internet governance, and data protection in new technologies.
