Biography

Bess Ruff is a marine social scientist with broad interests in human-ocean interactions and the development and management of policy mechanisms that support coexisting objectives for healthy oceans, economic security, and social equity. She has a background in economics, conservation planning, marine resources management, and geography. Bess employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the socioeconomic drivers of marine aquaculture development worldwide. Before joining the Thriving Oceans Research Hub, she was a postdoctoral researcher at Florida State University in conjunction with the National Sea Grant Law Center at the University of Mississippi, where she investigated policy mechanisms to facilitate sustainable marine aquaculture development in the U.S. and globally.
