Dr. Beth Bailey

Biography

Beth Bailey is a prominent scholar in the field of American history, focusing on military, war, and society in the United States during the 20th century. Currently serving as the Pitt Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge, she has an extensive academic background that includes a decade as a Foundation Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Military, War, and Society Studies at the University of Kansas. Throughout her career, Bailey's research has been supported by prestigious organizations such as the Carnegie Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, reflecting her significant contributions to the discipline. In addition to her teaching and research, she has lectured internationally, sharing her expertise in countries including Australia, Indonesia, and France. In acknowledgment of her outstanding work, she was elected to the Society of American Historians in 2017 and received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for lifetime achievement in military history in 2022. She was also honored with the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award from the University of Kansas in 2024 and played a pivotal role in the Department of the Army Historical Advisory Subcommittee until its recent dissolution.
