Biography

Beth Redbird is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University and a faculty fellow at the Institute for Policy Research. Her research focuses on the impact of between-group boundaries on social interaction, conflict, and inequality. Redbird examines both formal borders between nations and informal cultural differences, exploring how these boundaries create inequalities that restrict the flow of resources and knowledge. Her current projects include investigating how modern settler-colonial boundaries constrain the influence of Native nations and analysing patterns of human movement across spaces. Redbird’s work emphasizes the importance of interaction in improving well-being and highlights the detrimental effects of social isolation. She employs innovative methods, including anonymous GPS data, to study the frequency and diversity of interactions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to her research, she teaches courses on social inequality, Native Studies, and survey design.
