Biography

Beth Robertson is an Adjunct Research Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow specializing in the history of gender, sexuality, and technology in late 19th and 20th century Canada and North America. Her research examines the intersections of disability and science, focusing on how marginalized bodies interact with technologies. Robertson has served as Project Director for a notable International Development Research Centre grant that funded a $1.1 million initiative aimed at designing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) solutions for low-and-middle-income countries, with an emphasis on gendered perspectives. Her teaching focuses on queer theory and public history while encouraging critical engagement with transnationalism and disability studies. She is the author of various works, including 'Science Séance: Transnational Networks and Gendered Bodies in the Study of Psychic Phenomena, 1918-1940', a book published by UBC Press in 2016. Her other notable contributions include publications in edited collections addressing Canadian science and technology and gender history. Robertson's latest research project, 'Blind Machina', explores the role of technology in shaping knowledge and experiences of disability in postwar Canada, thereby illuminating the socio-political dimensions of technology in everyday life.
