Dr. Beth Simmons

Biography

Beth Simmons is the Andrea Mitchell University Professor in the Law and Political Science departments at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research primarily focuses on international relations, international law, and international political economy. Simmons is well-known for her work on the intersection of international law and human rights outcomes and has published significant contributions to the field, including her notable books 'Adjusts? Domestic Sources Foreign Economic Policy Interwar Years' (2004) and 'Mobilizing Human Rights: International Law Domestic Politics' (2009), which won the American Political Science Association’s Woodrow Wilson Award. Her expertise in international affairs is recognized by various academic institutions, and she was awarded the 2010 Book of the Year by the American Society of International Law and the International Studies Association. Simmons served a year at the International Monetary Fund and has led the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard. She was also elected as President of the International Studies Association and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Currently, her research encompasses areas such as global performance assessments, informal governance mechanisms in international affairs, and issues concerning international border crossings and transnational crime.
