Dr. Bethlehem Mekonnen

Biography

Bethlehem Mekonnen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at the Byers Eye Institute, Stanford Health Care. She serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Mekonnen specializes in diagnosing and treating a wide range of eye conditions, including cataracts and corneal external eye diseases, and creates individualized, comprehensive care plans for her patients. Her clinical research interests focus on exploring effective medical and surgical therapies for patients with corneal external eye diseases. Dr. Mekonnen has researched and published on the outcomes of macular edema, described a novel surgical technique for severe ocular surface disease, and documented a potential new ophthalmic manifestation of a rare congenital disorder known as Cobb syndrome. Her work has been published in prominent journals such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Cornea: Journal of Cornea and External Disease. She has presented her research at major conferences including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the Women in Ophthalmology Summer Symposium. Dr. Mekonnen is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, emphasizing her dedication to advancing her field.
