Biography

Betsy Parkinson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Purdue University, with a research focus on organic chemistry and the discovery of novel bioactive natural products (NPs). Her lab addresses the growing health crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and aims to discover new chemotherapeutics through innovative strategies for activating cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). The main areas of research include the induction of BGCs to discover novel NPs, the synthesis of peptide macrocycles inspired by BGCs, and the development of high-throughput assays for challenging anticancer and antibacterial targets. Her approach allows for the discovery of new agents that can be used against types of bioactive molecules that target difficult-to-hit pathways. Students in her lab are trained in organic synthesis, natural product structure elucidation, and various screening techniques, gaining valuable experience for their future careers. Currently, she is seeking graduate students to join her research team.
