Biography

Betty Chewning is a professor at the UW Comprehensive Diabetes Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her work primarily focuses on gathering patient and family perspectives in the management of chronic conditions, particularly diabetes. She is involved in collaborative research with Dr. Elizabeth Cox’s teams to develop and evaluate screening tools and tailored group interventions. Her research also includes multi-university projects funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, aimed at facilitating pharmacist-patient consultations that support diabetes management. Chewning supervises graduate student Ejura Salihu, who is conducting qualitative research on the stress faced by adolescents and young adults in managing diabetes. This research has led to the development of a mindfulness app in collaboration with the Healthy Minds Institute. Moreover, Chewning serves on Dr. Eva Vivian’s advisory committee for an ADA-funded study titled "HOPE," which is analyzing an intervention designed to help vulnerable populations with diabetes improve their dietary habits.
