Dr. Betty Raman

Biography

Betty Raman is an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, specializing in advanced cardiovascular imaging, including cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and cardiac CT. She also serves as a Senior Honorary Consultant Cardiologist. Her research focuses on inherited cardiomyopathic heart disease and the development of novel imaging techniques to detect myocardial hypoxia non-invasively, providing early biomarkers for disease activity. Since joining the University of Oxford in 2015 to pursue her DPhil on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death among young adults and athletes, she has made significant contributions to the understanding of cardiovascular conditions. Raman's pioneering work has been recognized internationally, winning prestigious awards from organizations like the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American Heart Association (AHA). She has also received funding for her multidisciplinary research program integrating imaging, genetics, and computational modeling, aimed at identifying and validating early markers of disease progression. She led the C-MORE study during the COVID-19 pandemic, which explored the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on cardiovascular health. Her current research interests include the use of generation CMR techniques for disease monitoring and understanding cross-organ interactions in cardiometabolic disease.
