Dr. Bic Tieu

Biography

Bic Tieu is a lecturer in the School of Art and Design at the University of New South Wales, specializing in traditional and contemporary jewellery and object design. Bic's practice is rooted in exploring how objects can tell stories and express cultural knowledge, particularly through Asian cultural perspectives. With expertise in traditional metal lacquer technologies, Bic's work often investigates personal and cross-cultural narratives, highlighting hybrid cultural identities and diasporic experiences. Since starting their education in jewellery design in the late 1990s at the University of New South Wales, Bic has developed a rich professional practice that includes prestigious training in Japan, where they studied traditional Japanese lacquer techniques. Bic completed a practice-based PhD at the Australian National University, focusing on jewellery and object making. Their works have been featured in international competitions and solo exhibitions and are held in collections across Australia and Japan. In addition to academic duties, Bic engages in community workshops and talks and is recognized for a freelance design practice that synthesizes contemporary jewellery with traditional techniques. Currently, Bic convenes and teaches various object courses and mentors students within the Design Honours program, while actively participating in committees that promote craftsmanship in Australia.
