Biography

Bill Howe is an Associate Professor in the Information School and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at the University of Washington. He also serves as Associate Director and Senior Data Science Fellow at the UW eScience Institute. Bill is the co-founder of Urban@UW, an initiative supported by the MacArthur Foundation and Microsoft, which leads UW's participation in the MetroLab Network. He created the MOOC Data Science on Coursera and was instrumental in the establishment of the UW Data Science Master's Degree program, where he serves as Program Director and Faculty Chair. His research group focuses on making data science techniques and technologies more accessible, particularly at scale, employing methods rooted in database models and languages, and intersecting with machine learning, data visualization, human-computer interaction, and high-performance computing. Bill's applied, systems-oriented group engages in projects and collaborations across various scientific disciplines.
