Dr. Bill Mayew

Biography

Bill Mayew is the Martin L. Black Jr. Distinguished Professor of Business Administration in the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006. Professor Mayew specializes in managerial communication and its impact on firm performance, particularly focusing on voluntary disclosures in financial reporting. His research integrates theories from economics and psychology to analyze the determinants and repercussions of both voluntary and mandatory managerial communications. He was awarded the 2008 Financial Research Association Paper Award for his work on the information content of managerial vocal cues during earnings conference calls, and received the Glen McLaughlin Prize for Research in Accounting Ethics in 2013 for his analysis of CEO integrity in corporate communication found in shareholder letters. In 2019, he won the Jensen Prize from the Journal of Financial Economics for his research on race discrimination in the higher education bond market. His work has been published in various reputable journals, including the Journal of Finance and Accounting Review, and he has served as an editor for the Accounting Review. Professor Mayew teaches financial accounting courses across several programs, including Executive Education and MBA programs, and has been recognized for his teaching excellence. In 2014, he was named one of the top 40 business school professors under 40 by Poets & Quants.
