Bill Nace has been teaching at Carnegie Mellon University since 2008 and takes great pleasure in instructing classes focused on computer hardware and distributed systems. He teaches various courses including 18-240, 18-341, 18-545, 18-500, 18-213, 18-600, and 18-842. Bill serves as the Chairman of the ECE Program Assessment Committee and is the Faculty Advisor for the HKN honor society. He is also a founder of the College of Engineering’s Teaching Faculty Council. Before joining CMU, Bill served in the Air Force for 25 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His assignments in the Air Force included Command Center development, secure communication systems, semiconductor fabrication, and teaching at the Air Force Academy. He was also the Chief Scientist for Asian Research Development. He appreciates the opportunities for formal education provided by the Air Force, as he holds a BSEE from the Air Force Academy, an MSEE from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. from CMU. Passionate about making things, Bill enjoys sharing his latest creation, which involves building with laser cutters and 3D printers alongside coding on FPGAs.
