Biography

Bill Press is the Warren J. Viola M. Raymer Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds affiliations with the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology (ICMB) and the Institute for Computational Engineering Sciences (ICES). With a distinguished career, he served as a Senior Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Statistical Sciences group. In 2009, he was appointed by President Obama to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). His research focuses on the development of fast numerical statistical algorithms, data mining, and pattern recognition. He applies mathematical and statistical methods to interdisciplinary areas, including physical and biological sciences and societal issues related to international security. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the California Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumnus Award and being named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
