Biography

Billy Holzberg is a sociologist and cultural theorist working as a Lecturer in Social Justice at King’s College London. His work explores affective sexual politics and authoritarian nationalism, with a focus on understanding how people attach exclusionary and violent notions to nation and border-making. With sociological training, he draws on gender studies, cultural studies, and international politics. Before joining King's College London, he was a Fellow in the Gender Culture Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics and completed his PhD in Gender Studies. Billy is on the editorial board of Sociological Review and the steering committee of Queer@King's. He has also been a visiting scholar at Columbia University and the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil. His research is grounded in affect theory, queer feminist studies, and cultural media analysis, exploring the rise of nationalism and authoritarian politics in contemporary society. His recent publications include 'Affective Bordering: Race, Deservingness, and Migration Control,' which investigates the emotional aspects of nationality and citizenship during the so-called 'refugee crisis' in Germany. He is actively involved in interdisciplinary research and collaborates with grassroots organizations and activist communities.
