Dr. Binyam Demena

Biography

Binyam Afewerk Demena is an Assistant Professor in Development Economics at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands. His research is deeply rooted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and focuses on international economics, environmental impacts, development, and health. He aims to make creative contributions to cutting-edge econometrics and has published in top-tier field journals, addressing societal challenges through a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. His extensive research portfolio includes systematic research synthesis and impact evaluation projects covering a range of topics such as solar energy systems, environmental emissions, international trade, foreign direct investment, economic sanctions, information and communications technology for development (ICT4D), public health, rural infrastructure programs, and the formalization of informal firms. Utilizing observational, experimental, and quasi-experimental evaluation techniques, his work has been featured in esteemed scientific journals such as World Development and Energy Economics. Binyam has a solid background in field research in low- and middle-income countries and has served as a co-coordinator and principal investigator of EU/ACP-financed projects aimed at enhancing capacity for policymakers and trade associations in Tanzania. In addition to his research, he has substantial teaching experience in Economics and research methodology and has developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on trade and investment policies funded by EUR's Centre for Learning Innovation.
