Biography

Bipul C. Hawlader received his B.Sc. in civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1992, followed by a Master’s in geotechnical engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand in 1995, and a PhD in geotechnical engineering from Yokohama National University in Japan in 1998. He has worked as a research associate at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom and as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Western Ontario in Canada from 2002 to 2006. Following this, he served as a senior research engineer at C-CORE, focusing on geotechnical issues related to onshore and offshore oil gas development. Dr. Hawlader then worked as a senior geotechnical engineer at AMEC Earth and Environmental in Calgary, primarily on oil sands development projects. He joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland as an Associate Professor in 2009 and was promoted to full Professor in 2016. He was appointed Research Chair in Seafloor Mechanics in 2016. His research focuses on numerical modeling, soil-structure interaction, centrifuge modeling, and laboratory testing. Dr. Hawlader has developed a strong research team in geotechnical engineering at Memorial University and collaborates with several researchers worldwide.
