Biography

Birendra Jha is an Associate Professor in the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Southern California. He received his doctoral degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2014 and has two Master's degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Petroleum Engineering from MIT and Stanford University, respectively. His research focuses on modeling groundwater flows, contaminant transport, induced seismicity, hydraulic fracturing, enhanced oil recovery, and reservoir characterization. Through his work at USC, he emphasizes a mathematical and computational approach to studying geophysical systems and creating theoretical computational tools. His research group, GEM Lab, investigates the physics and mathematics of geophysical fluid flows and rock deformation, integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence to tackle engineering challenges related to energy and the environment.
