Biography

Birgit Bräuchler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen, where she has been since March 2021. Before relocating to Denmark, she worked at Monash University in Australia starting in 2015 and held positions at Goethe University in Frankfurt from 2008 onwards. Bräuchler has gained valuable experience through postdoctoral fellowships at prestigious institutions such as the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore and the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) in Leiden. She holds a Ph.D. from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (2005) and completed her habilitation at Goethe University Frankfurt in 2014. Her primary research interests include media, digital anthropology, conflict and peace studies, human cultural rights, activism, and brokerage, particularly in relation to Southeast Asia, with a focus on Indonesia. Bräuchler is a member of the researcher groups 'Culture, Mobility Power' (CAMP), 'Nature, Environment Climate' (NEC), and 'Techne' within the Asian Dynamics Initiative. Additionally, she holds external research roles as Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University and Adjunct Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt.
