Dr. Birgit Krawietz

Biography

Birgit Krawietz is a Professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. Her research focuses on Islamic Law, Salafism, cultural history, physical culture, and the contemporary socio-cultural dynamics in the Arab Gulf and Turkey. She has authored and edited numerous books and articles examining the intersections of Islamic jurisprudence, ethics, and various cultural practices, including sports in Muslim societies. Some of her notable works include 'Islamic Theology, Philosophy and Law' and edited volumes on topics such as global Islam and spiritual medicine. Krawietz has contributed to various academic journals and is actively engaged in public scholarship, advocating for a nuanced understanding of the complexities of Islamic traditions. In addition, she serves on the advisory board of the Orient-Institut Beirut and has held significant roles in academic committees within her institution. Her multidisciplinary approach combines history, sociology, and law to provide insights into contemporary issues facing Muslim communities.
