Dr. Birgit Puschner

Biography

Birgit Puschner is a Professor at Michigan State University, where she serves in the Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. She previously held the position of Dean at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University from 2018 to 2023 and was the chair of the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of California, Davis, from 2013 to 2018. With a DVM and Ph.D. from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany, she has distinguished herself as a diagnostic research toxicologist with a national and international reputation. Her research focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms and detection methodologies of toxicants affecting animals. Notable areas of her investigation include novel toxicants, environmental toxins, and algal toxins, leading to significant contributions in understanding the public health implications of animal diseases. Additionally, Puschner is actively involved in educating post-graduate and resident levels, utilizing technology to enhance teaching outcomes. She has received accolades for developing effective blended and fully online courses in pharmacology and toxicology. Throughout her career, she has mentored numerous students and trainees, many of whom have progressed to successful careers.
