Birgit Vogel-Heuser is a Professor of Automation Information Systems at the Technical University of Munich. She received her Dipl. Ing. in electrical engineering in 1987 and her Dr.-Ing. in mechanical engineering in 1990 from RWTH Aachen, Germany. With ten years of industrial experience in automation, she focuses on software engineering modeling for distributed, reliable, and embedded systems. Her research addresses the challenges posed by the increasing demand for customer-specific products in the manufacturing domain, particularly through the use of hybrid processes and human-centered approaches. Appointed in 2009, she has aimed to push the boundaries of field-level automation and the appropriate architectures for manufacturing logistics systems. She is a Fellow of IEEE and serves as a Distinguished Lecturer and Co-Chair of IEEE RAS TC Digital Manufacturing Human-Centered Automation, as well as being a member of the National Academy of Science Engineering in Germany (acatech). In 2024, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her contributions.
