Biography

Birgitta Lindh Estelle is a Professor specializing in Comparative Literature with a focus on drama and theatre at the University of Gothenburg. Her thesis, published in 2006, explored Swedish feminist theatre in the 1970s, specifically the works of Margareta Garpe and Suzanne Osten. Lindh Estelle's recent research includes the exploration of sentimental and melodramatic elements in women’s socio-realistic plays from the late nineteenth century to the modern breakthrough. Her findings are documented in her monograph "Som en vildfågel en bur" (2019), which examines identity, love, and the role of women in theatre. She has participated in collaborative research projects funded by the Swedish Research Council, exploring the reception of women playwrights in the 19th century, including significant contributions to the anthology "Swedish Women’s Writing Export: Tracing Transnational Reception Nineteenth Century". Her work has been pivotal in analyzing the ways cultural intermediaries shape the modernity of women's literature and theatre.
