Professor Dr. Birgitta Velthuis

Biography

Birgitta Velthuis completed her medical radiology training in Utrecht, Netherlands, and obtained her PhD degree in 1998 with a focus on CT angiography in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Since 1999, she has worked as a radiologist at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), specializing in cardiovascular and neurovascular non-invasive CT and MRI imaging. Velthuis is a Professor of Radiology at Utrecht University, where she is involved in patient care, teaching, and research. Her research primarily involves neurovascular imaging related to ischemic strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages, and intracranial aneurysms. In addition, her cardiovascular research emphasizes imaging atherosclerosis and cardiomyopathies. Recently, she has integrated artificial intelligence and high field strength MRI techniques into her work, focusing on enhancing individualized detection and prediction while developing minimally invasive treatments for cardiovascular diseases. Velthuis also holds advisory roles at the Netherlands Vascular Forum (NVF) and regularly presents for Philips Healthcare.
