Dr. Birthe Kundrus

Biography

Birthe Kundrus is a Professor of Social and Economic History at the University of Hamburg, with a focus on social history. She completed her doctorate at the University of Bielefeld, where her dissertation addressed German gender and social policies during World War I and World War II. Her academic career includes positions as a research assistant at the Historical Seminar of Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg and as a fellow of the German Research Foundation. She has held numerous visiting professorships, including at the University of Hanover, and has been involved in various research projects examining the theory and history of violence, colonial studies, and the history of National Socialism. Kundrus is also an active member of various academic boards and has contributed significantly to the fields of historical anthropology and social history through her publications, including works on the implications of colonialism, the Holocaust, and gender relations in Germany. Her research interests are deeply interdisciplinary, bridging historical analysis with contemporary issues surrounding identity and memory.
