Dr. Bishal Gyawali

Biography

Dr. Bishal Gyawali, MD, PhD, FASCO, is a physician-scientist and medical oncologist serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology and the Division of Cancer Care and Epidemiology at Queen's University. He is known internationally for his work in global oncology, evidence-based medicine, and health policy. Dr. Gyawali combines clinical practice with a bold research agenda aimed at making cancer care equitable, affordable, and effective. He earned his medical degree from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University in Nepal, completed his PhD in medical science at Nagoya University in Japan, and undertook a fellowship in cancer policy at Harvard University. His training reflects a global perspective, and he is deeply committed to educating medical students, residents, and early-career oncologists, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. He emphasizes critical thinking and the responsible use of healthcare resources in his teaching. Dr. Gyawali's clinical expertise focuses on treating breast cancer and genitourinary cancers, employing evidence-based practices to enhance patient outcomes. He actively participates in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver compassionate, personalized cancer care. His research encompasses global oncology, cancer drug development, health economics, clinical trial design, and access to cancer care. He has published extensively in high-impact journals and serves on multiple editorial boards and international committees, including ASCO’s Value in Cancer Care Task Force.
