Biography

Bjarne Wernicke-Olesen is a Research Lecturer in the History of Religion with a special emphasis on Indic Religions and Languages such as Sanskrit and Pali. He has been trained in classical Indology and comparative studies of religion. As a Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies and a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion, he teaches and tutors broadly on topics including Sanskrit, Pali, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the theories and methods of the study of religion. He directs the Śākta Traditions research programme and is the founder of the OCHS Kathmandu Office. His research combines detailed textual studies with broader historical and metatheoretical concerns, focusing particularly on asceticism and Śāktism in medieval India and Nepal. He has authored several publications, including 'Introduction to Hinduism' (2015) and has completed annotated translations of significant texts such as the Netratantra and the Bhagavadgītā. His recent work involves the study of comparative religion, South Asian religious history, and the philology of Indic languages.
