Biography

Prof. Bas Arts holds a Personal Chair in Forest Governance at the Forest Nature Conservation Policy group at Wageningen University, Netherlands. He has a Master's degree in Biology specializing in forest ecology and environmental sciences (1987) and a PhD in Policy Sciences and Public Administration (1998). His research focuses on international forest governance, biodiversity, climate change governance, and local natural resource management. He has experience conducting research in the Netherlands, Europe, and the Global South and has collaborated with both natural and social scientists. He has held several visiting professor positions in prestigious institutions across Europe and the USA and has published around 150 academic articles, books, and chapters. Throughout his career, he has supervised numerous PhDs and taught multiple courses related to his areas of expertise. Most recently, he served as the Chief Scientist at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and has received significant research grants from various institutions. His recent book, "Forest Governance: Hydra Chloris," was published by Cambridge University Press in 2021.
