Biography

Bjorn R. Olsen is a Professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, specializing in Developmental Biology and Cell Biology. He leads research activities focused on skeletal vascular development and the mechanisms controlling development and homeostasis of the vertebrate skeleton. His work employs a combination of human and mouse genetics, as well as studies of cell cultures, to elucidate pathogenetic mechanisms related to specific mutations that affect skeletal growth and repair. Dr. Olsen is particularly interested in the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts and adipocytes. He is also investigating the causes of degenerative joint disease, specifically osteoarthritis, in both humans and mice. His research aims to identify mutations responsible for early-onset osteoarthritis and to analyze the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved, while exploring strategies to reduce the progression of this condition.
