Blake Hannaford held engineering positions in digital hardware and software design, office automation, and medical image processing. He pursued thesis research on multiple target tracking in medical images for control of time-optimal voluntary human movement. From 1986 to 1989, he worked on remote control robot manipulators in the Man-Machine Systems Group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. In September 1989, he joined the University of Washington in Seattle, except for work at Google Life Sciences from 2014-2015. Hannaford was awarded the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award and the Early Career Achievement Award from the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. His current research interests include haptic displays, surgical biomechanics, and biologically based design of robot manipulators. He co-founded the spinout company Applied Dexterity in 2013, and is involved in teaching and developing a new master's program in robotics, specifically the Master of Science in Technology Innovation (Robotics).
