Biography

Blas Cabrera is the Stanley G. Wojcicki Professor, Emeritus, in the Department of Physics at Stanford University. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University in 1975 and his B.S. in Physics from the University of Virginia in 1968. Cabrera has greatly contributed to the field of particle physics, particularly in the search for dark matter. He has been a spokesperson for the SuperCDMS (Cryogenic Dark Matter Search) collaboration, which involves twenty-two member institutions. This collaboration has conducted a series of experiments in the search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). His innovative work has allowed direct detection efforts to improve world sensitivity to dark matter over the past decade, utilizing novel cryogenic detectors made from germanium and silicon crystals operated at very low temperatures. Cabrera has completed the CDMS II experiment, which set sensitive limits on spin-independent interactions of WIMPs. He currently leads the G2 SuperCDMS experiment, which is set to operate with larger detectors at the SNOLAB facility in Canada, continuing the search for low mass WIMPs.
