Biography

Blase Ur is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. He leads the UChicago SUPERgroup, an interdisciplinary research collective focused on engaging with and understanding the complexities of technology interactions. His research emphasizes the defense against emerging threats in our increasingly computational world, where he explores how users make password-security decisions. Blase earned his PhD in 2016 from Carnegie Mellon University in the Societal Computing program, where he was advised by Lorrie Cranor. His dissertation contributed significantly to the understanding of user password-security behaviors. In addition to his research, Blase is dedicated to teaching and outreach, particularly in promoting diversity in computer science among high school students. He has received multiple awards, including the Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2021 and the NSF CAREER Award in the same year. Blase is also active in various academic communities and frequently collaborates with other researchers to tackle complex challenges in computing systems.
