Biography

Bo Chen is a Professor of Engineering Materials at the University of Southampton, specializing in high-temperature structural materials performance and advanced manufacturing. With over 15 years of experience, he has worked extensively in microstructural characterization and lifetime prediction related to creep and fatigue. After obtaining his BSc in Materials Engineering from Beihang University in 2003, Bo completed his PhD at the University of Bristol. He has held post-doctoral positions at both the Bristol’s High Temperature Centre and the University of Manchester's Materials Performance Centre. Bo has previously served as a Senior Lecturer at Coventry University before joining the University of Leicester as a Professor in March 2019. In April 2024, he moved to the University of Southampton. His research interests include digital twins for materials, sustainable metallurgy, and the integration of new technologies to enhance the durability and cost-efficiency of critical engineering components. Active projects include the accelerated design qualification of austenitic steels and research into metastable alloys. Bo is also involved in teaching and has developed numerous courses in materials and manufacturing.
