Biography

Dr. Bo Yang is a Frankel Research Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research specializes in understanding the mechanisms involved in thoracic aortic aneurysms, particularly connecting unknown mutations such as those from a bicuspid aortic valve. His lab focuses on developing novel therapies to mitigate aortic aneurysms and generating patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to model these conditions. Dr. Yang employs CRISPR Cas9 technology to correct mutations associated with thoracic aortic aneurysms, which enables him and his team to study the biological processes at play. Collaborating with bioengineers, he is also engaged in creating tissue-engineered vascular grafts from patients’ iPSCs. Additionally, his clinical research examines the outcomes of aortic surgery in adult patients, particularly concerning valve-sparing techniques and long-term management after surgery for conditions such as acute type dissection and active endocarditis. His innovative approaches and contributions to the field have been recognized through multiple prestigious awards.
