Biography

Bojana Videkanic is an art historian and artist originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, now residing in Canada. Her academic research primarily revolves around the artistic intellectual history of Yugoslavia in the 20th century, focusing on the roots and histories of socialism as well as Yugoslavia's foundational role in organizing the Non-Aligned Movement and international socialist cultural exchanges. In 2020, she published a book titled 'Nonaligned Modernities: Yugoslav Art and Culture 1945-1990' through McGill-Queens University Press. Videkanic is the recipient of several grants, including the SSHRC Insight Development Grant for a curatorial research project titled 'Scarborough Guild Arts' and the SSHRC Connection Grant for a symposium exhibition named 'This Place,' co-curated with Ivan Jurakic. Her current research interests include naïve amateur art in socialism and its connections to the Non-Aligned Movement, as well as the political engagement of international socialist countries. Her performance art practice draws from personal experiences of displacement, movement, and identity, intersecting with broader political, social, and cultural questions. Videkanic serves as an associate professor in fine arts at the University of Waterloo and is a board member of the 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival in Toronto. She has exhibited her work at several festivals, including Nuit Blanche in Toronto and 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival, among others.
