Biography

Bonj Szczygiel joined the faculty at Penn State in 1996 and retired in December 2024. During her time in the Department of Landscape Architecture, she contributed to undergraduate Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (B.L.A.) and Master of Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.) programs through teaching, course development, and program oversight. In spring 2020, she taught a graduate seminar that introduced foundational thinking in the landscape architecture discipline, finding a particular teaching ‘home’ in LARCH 60, a popular general education course that introduces students to the world of design and land use. Szczygiel's service to the University has been extensive, including being elected Chair of the University Faculty Senate from 2022 to 2023, overseeing curricular matters and presiding over Senate committees that addressed a vast range of University issues affecting faculty and students. Her research has focused on the historiography of built environments, and she co-chaired a conference on gendered landscapes in 1999, leading to published edited volumes. She has researched the sociological history of the landscape architecture profession and the role of women in urban development during the 19th century, as well as Frederick Law Olmsted’s idea of “salubrious landscapes.” Recently, she has begun exploring the cultural significance of memorials and the meta-messages they convey.
