Biography

Boris Gaensicke is a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick, where he also serves as an ERC Advanced Grant Fellow leading the WDPLANETS project from 2021 to 2026. His research primarily focuses on the study of white dwarfs and the evolution of planetary systems that may arise from stars with initial masses less than 10 times the mass of the Sun. He is particularly interested in the pathways that lead to thermonuclear supernovae, relying on observational studies of both single and binary white dwarfs. Gaensicke has extensive experience in stellar atmospheres and ultraviolet astronomy, with significant contributions to large-scale astronomical surveys, including the DESI and SDSS-V spectroscopic surveys. He actively utilizes the Hubble Space Telescope to gain insurmountable insight into the physical properties of white dwarfs by studying atomic transitions. Through his work, he has been involved in the ZTF-II collaboration, which aims to provide photometry across the Northern Hemisphere for the study of time-domain phenomena. Upcoming projects also include the Time Domain Telescope concept, a facility anticipated to be operational by the 2040s.
