Biography

Borja Martinovic is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University in the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science and a member of the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER). His research broadly deals with group identities, immigrant integration, and intergroup relations in multi-ethnic societies. He has been trained in sociological and social-psychological research traditions. He completed his PhD in sociology at Utrecht University on the topic of interethnic contacts in Western countries. His work utilizes nationally representative longitudinal surveys of immigrants in the Netherlands, Germany, and Canada to examine the development of immigrants’ contacts with natives in their host countries, identifying socio-demographic determinants of these interethnic contacts. His subsequent research has a social-psychological character. He worked on a postdoctoral project at Utrecht University, investigating national identification among ethnic minorities and native Dutch in the Netherlands, as well as the ethnic and religious identification of ethnic minorities and its effects on intergroup relations. Additionally, he has served as a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland, Australia, supported by the Endeavour Research Fellowship Award, where he collaborated with Professor Jolanda Jetten on post-migration relations for immigrant groups from conflict areas, particularly focusing on ethnic groups from Yugoslavia living in Australia. After returning to Utrecht University, he held the position of assistant associate professor and was elected as a member of the Utrecht Young Academy in 2016. He is currently the Principal Investigator for a project on collective psychological ownership in intergroup relations, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant from 2017 to 2023, and is a consortium member and work package leader for a project on changing colonial heritage in Europe funded by Horizon Europe from 2024 to 2027.
