Bosco Yu obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge with a research focus on structural mechanics. He is a Croucher scholar fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, which promotes scientific inquiry. Before joining the University of Victoria, he conducted post-doctoral research at the University of Toronto and worked at McMaster University. Dr. Yu joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria as an Assistant Professor in September 2022. His research group, known as 'Hybrid 3D', leverages the power of additive manufacturing to develop novel materials inspired by nature. Dr. Yu takes inspiration from organic and inorganic structures to create architected materials optimized for specific design challenges across a variety of applications. His ongoing research projects are related to biomedical applications, including the design of porous surgical implants to enhance bone integration and avoid stress shielding, the geometrical design of bioresorbable stents to reduce the risk of thrombosis, and the design of architectures for 3D printed crushable materials aimed at injury prevention applications.
