Boudewijn Sirks studied Law at the University of Leiden (LLM) and pursued further studies in Theology and Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD in law in 1984. Sirks has held positions at law faculties in Utrecht, Amsterdam, and Leiden, served as Professor of Legal History and Private Law at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt from 1998 to 2006, and was a Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford and a Fellow of Souls College until his retirement in 2014. He is an editorial member of the Tijdschrift voor Rechtsgeschiedenis (Legal History Review) and has been a Visiting Scholar at various universities. He is also a Corresponding Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of Accademia Romanistica Costantiniana and Associazione Storico-Giuridico Costantiniana.
