Dr. Brad Inwood

Biography

Brad Inwood is the William Lampson Professor in the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Classics at Yale University. He specializes in ancient philosophy with a particular emphasis on Stoicism and the Presocratics. He received his BA in Classics from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, and his MA in Classics from the University of Toronto. In addition, he conducted a year of post-graduate research at Cambridge and completed his doctorate in Classics at Toronto, focusing on ancient philosophy. His research centers on ancient philosophy, particularly the Hellenistic and Presocratic periods. Major works include 'Ethics and Human Action in Early Stoicism,' 'Poem of Empedocles,' 'Reading Seneca: Stoic Philosophy in Rome,' 'Seneca: Selected Philosophical Letters,' and 'Ethics of Aristotle.' He served as editor of 'Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy' from 2007 to 2015. Currently, he is working on a project titled 'Stoicism from 155 BC to AD 200: Introduction, Collection of Sources, and Translation' for Cambridge University Press. His primary appointments are in the fields of Philosophy and Classics, and his areas of special interest include moral psychology and ethics related to ancient philosophical traditions.
