Bradley J. Cardinale is an ecologist focusing on conservation restoration and biodiversity in natural systems. He specializes in ecological design and human-engineered systems to benefit and utilize native species diversity. With over 130 peer-reviewed publications, he has garnered more than $38 million in grant funding and was ranked among the world’s highly cited researchers in the Environment/Ecology field in 2014. Cardinale has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Ecological Society of America (ESA). He earned his B.S. in Biology from Arizona State University in 1993, followed by an M.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from Michigan State University in 1996, and completed his Ph.D. in Biology at the University of Maryland in 2002. His graduate studies included ecological restoration of freshwater ecosystems.His faculty career began at the University of California, Santa Barbara as an Assistant Professor in 2005, focusing on the conservation and management of biodiversity in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. In 2011, he joined the University of Michigan to direct the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research, collaborating with various stakeholders for sustainable management of the Great Lakes. As of 2021, he is the Head of Penn State’s Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, coordinating research, teaching, and extension activities for over 50 faculty and 100 graduate students dedicated to the sustainable management of natural and managed ecosystems.
