Dr. Bradley Efron

Biography

Bradley Efron is the Max H. Stein Professor of Statistics and Biomedical Data Science, Emeritus, at Stanford University. He has held visiting faculty appointments at Harvard University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Imperial College London. Efron is recognized for his contributions to both theoretical and applied statistics, especially the bootstrap sampling technique, and he was awarded the National Medal of Science in 2005. In 2014, he received the prestigious Guy Medal in Gold from the Royal Statistical Society. Working with David Cox from the University of Oxford, Efron was honored as a Laureate in the 2016 edition of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards for revolutionizing statistics and making it an indispensable tool across the sciences. He has authored a significant book titled "Computer Age Statistical Inference," which reviews the development of statistical thinking from the 1950s with an emphasis on computational methods and inferential ideas. His academic career includes numerous appointments at Stanford, where he has contributed to the growth of the Department of Statistics and the School of Medicine, alongside his role in the administration of the university.
