Biography

Brandi Vanderspank-Wright is an Associate Professor and the Director of the School of Nursing at the University of Ottawa. She is also an affiliate investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the president of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses. Her clinical practice is rooted in adult critical care, end-of-life care, and critical care residential hospice settings. With over 40 years of cumulative research on critical care nursing in Canada, her doctoral studies focused on the evolution and development of this practice area. Currently, her research addresses the experiences of clinicians, particularly nurses, as they navigate complex healthcare situations that are characteristic of critical care environments. A significant portion of her work emphasizes the support of newly graduated nurses transitioning into critical care practice. Vanderspank-Wright is particularly invested in enhancing the quality of end-of-life care within critical care contexts, working towards a nuanced understanding of the end-of-life experiences for both clinicians and family members, especially during the withdrawal or withholding of life-sustaining measures. She is open to supervising new thesis students and is known for her qualitative research design pursuits in critical care and end-of-life care.
