Biography

Brandon Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and is also affiliated with the Department of Politics and the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. He develops new quantitative statistical methods for applications in the social sciences. His methodological focus includes tools that facilitate automated text analysis and model complex heterogeneity in regression. Stewart's recent applications of these methods center around using large corpora of text to understand propaganda in contemporary China. His research has been published in reputable journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, Political Analysis, and the Proceedings of the Association for Computational Linguistics. His work has received several accolades, including the Edward R. Chase Dissertation Prize, the Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology, and Political Analysis Editor’s Choice Award. His research agenda aims to create and distribute new statistical tools for analyzing data in the social sciences and to uncover hidden latent structures that provide insight into processes that are otherwise impossible or costly to study. Stewart's recent work has also explored newspaper archives to unpack the contemporary media environment in China and expose the methods of propaganda employed by the government. His methodological approaches are designed to be applicable in a variety of contexts, including education, human trafficking, forced migration, international relations, constitutional law, and psychology.
