Biography

Brandon Velie completed a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Master of Science in Animal Breeding & Genetics from North Carolina State University in the USA. He earned his PhD from the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Veterinary Science in Sydney, Australia. His professional career includes work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden. Currently, he serves as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. Velie's research is centered on understanding the genetic basis of athletic performance, diseases, and behavior in horses and equids. His work is particularly focused on equine genetics and genomics with an emphasis on athletic performance and health. His research interests align with the Faculty of Science's strengths in Healthy Animals, Precision Digital Health, and Biodiversity Conservation. He is involved in projects investigating inherited diseases in felines as well as thoroughbred racing performance and its influences on the post-racing careers of horses.
