Brannon D. Ingram specializes in Islamic studies, focusing on Islam in South Asia and the global South Asian diasporas, with particular interest in the debates surrounding Sufism and Islamic law in the modern era. He received his B.A. in Religion from Reed College, his M.A. in Islamic Studies from Leiden University, and his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ingram’s book, 'Revival: The Deoband Movement in Global Islam,' published by the University of California Press in 2018, examines the Deoband movement, a network of traditionally educated Muslim scholars founded at the Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband seminary in northern India during the mid-nineteenth century. This movement has become one of the most influential Muslim revivalist movements in the past century. Ingram's current research includes a book addressing the complexities of categorizing 'religion' in Muslim societies, particularly as it relates to Western concepts of religion shaped by colonialism and the influence of political Islam. He has been supported in his research and teaching by the American Council of Learned Societies, the Social Science Research Council, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Ingram regularly teaches courses on the Introduction to Islam, Sufism, Islamic Law, and the Qur'an, and received the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. He co-directs the Global Politics and Religion Research Group with Elizabeth Shakman Hurd.
